Only real issue with the lighting that I can see is that the tail isn't being back-reflected by the same source lighting the forth planes of the rest of the body. and, having grown up on cel animation, like 90% of your audience won't care if the moving part has flat colors.

I have no conception of lighting and tone, that's part of the reason why I like animation to begin with. From the beginning, I've been only interested in chiascouro for dramatic effect, and only in difference of tone (if not pattern) to seperate variegated planes. You acheive that beautifully when you have complicated backgrounds, so what can I say to you on the topic?
yeah, there was no way i was going to be that detailed XD And yes! Animation is good for laziness in categories that I enjoy being lazy in. Speaking of which, I need to start animating again, i keep saying it. BUT SERIOUSLY. Im trying to inception it into my brain by writing it out so much I guess.

Doesn't everyone want to do less work? Aside from, like, Ian Miller?

Try sketching a few motion studies. I find sometimes that I can get my brain to feel like doing the work by getting used to the space between drawings...
But yeah. Good luck for you in that department! ^^
